Kali Dal (Whole Black Beans) Recipe

Ingredients
1. Mahdal or urad dal (1c)
2. garlic (12cloves)
3. ginger (1” piece)
4. turmeric powder (1/4tsp)
5. salt and pepper (to taste)
6. ghee can be replaced by butter (2-3tbsp)
7. garam masala (to taste)
8. green chilies (to taste optional)
9. sliced onion (2)
10. cumin seeds (1tsp)
11. coriander seeds (1tsp)

Method of preparation:-
1. Take mah dal, clean it, wash it and then drain it. Boil water and then add the washed dal into the boiling water. Add half of the finely chopped ginger, garlic, turmeric powder, salt and pepper to taste.

2. Keep the dal on medium heat to cook for about 2-3 hours or pressure cooks it at 15psi for ½ hour. Now uncover the pan and reduce the heat to low. Cook it further in the same pan for about ½ an hour and stir it constantly. Cook it until the creamy consistency is achieved.

3. Take a small pan, heat the ghee in it add the sliced onions, remaining ginger and chili and fry them in the ghee until turn golden brown. Add the cumin seeds, coriander seeds and garam masala. Now pour this fried masala in the cooked dal. Serve it hot with chapatti or rice.
